B-ultrasound for the diagnosis of orchitis in rams
Testicular inflammation in rams occurs due to mechanical injury, contamination or secondary infection. When the sheep is examined with B-ultrasound, it can be seen that the texture of the testicles is uneven on the image, and the image of the sheep B-ultrasound can be used to make a relatively accurate judgment.
Causes: One is systemic infection of the sheep, such as mycoplasma, chlamydia or brucellosis; the second is infection of streptococci or staphylococci after the animal is injured; the third is the extension of inflammation of the surrounding tissues of the testicles (epididymis or accessory glands).
Symptoms: There are two types: acute and chronic. In acute cases, the ram arches its waist, spreads its two hind legs, and does not mount during mating. The symptoms are enlarged testicles, pain and fever, and shiny scrotum; the testicles are slightly hard on palpation, fluid in the cavity, thick spermatic cord, and painful when pressed. The sheep B-ultrasound examination can measure the large volume of the testicles, and the echo of the testicles on the sheep B-ultrasound image is uneven. Severely ill patients have a fast pulse, shallow breathing, depression, and high body temperature. In rams with suppurative infection, systemic symptoms occur, such as pus ascending into the abdominal cavity, causing suppurative peritonitis, and the prognosis is poor. Chronic, ram testicular tissue fibrinous degeneration, reduced elasticity and hardness; or one side of the testicle becomes smaller, the amount of semen is small and the quality is poor. When the sheep is examined by B-ultrasound, irregular strong echo spots can be seen on the image. The symptoms vary depending on the pathogen: if it is caused by brucellosis, the testicles and epididymis are abnormally swollen, with necrotic suppurative lesions; if it is caused by tuberculosis, the testicles and epididymis are cold abscesses, without heat and pain.
Treatment: Stop semen collection and breeding, rest treatment. Apply cold compress first, and then hot compress after 1 day to promote the dissipation of inflammation. Apply ichthyol ointment locally; inject 2% procaine 20mL and penicillin 80iu/head • times in the spermatic cord area, and use sheep B-ultrasound to check the treatment situation after treatment. For rams that fail to ejaculate or do not ejaculate, in addition to symptomatic treatment, testosterone propionate or testosterone phenylacetate can be tried, with a dose of 10-25 mg/ram •time, subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, once every other day, for 2-3 times in a row.
