Why use a B-ultrasound machine to detect pregnancy in sows?

When managing pig farms, using ultrasound machines to scan the pregnancy of sows has significant economic benefits. The ability to identify pregnant sows from never pregnant sows can achieve good reproductive management, thereby reducing non productive days.

Equally important, there are two reasons why non pregnant sows can be identified during ultrasound scanning using a pig B-ultrasound machine:

Non pregnant sows can be eliminated or reproduced in the next cycle.

Reducing pregnancy rates may be an early indication of farm diseases, sometimes up to 12 weeks before any clinical symptoms appear, so early action can be taken.

When to use a B-ultrasound machine to scan pigs for pregnancy

Pigs can be scanned for pregnancy using BXL-M5: BXL-M5 20 days after fertilization, but scanning them at 28 days will be more effective.

During pregnancy, ultrasound scanning of the sow will reveal multiple fluid filled sacs in the uterus. In ultrasound scanning, the liquid appears black and the uterus appears white, making it easy to identify.

There are two main benefits of using a B-ultrasound machine with pigs for 28 days:

Due to the larger and more prominent fluid filled sacs in the uterus, it is much easier to scan sows for pregnancy testing at 28 days, especially without human scanning. If the pig becomes loose and moves around, especially because the contact time between the ultrasound probe of the B-ultrasound machine and the pig is limited before the pig moves.

The fragile stage of pig pregnancy is 21 days, which is the implantation site. If you scan on the 19th day, the pig may not become pregnant after a week, so there is no need for additional scanning to ensure pregnancy can continue during this period.

Scanning after 6 weeks is very difficult because there is a lack of amniotic fluid during pregnancy. Amniotic fluid appears black on ultrasound scans and forms a natural contrast with the eyes to help identify pregnancy.
