In practice, ultrasound examination should be conducted in a darkroom (cowshed, milking parlor). The use of bovine ultrasound machines should be avoided outdoors or in open and very bright buildings. In these cases, using the protective cover (sun visor) that comes with certain devices can protect the screen from light exposure.

Before the inspection, the cow should be properly secured. The operator should move behind the animal. For right-handed individuals, the ultrasound scanner should be placed on the left side of the operator. For left-handed individuals, the same applies.

Due to the limited lateral movement of cows, ultrasound examination is easy when the animal is attached to the head lock. In the joint barn, sometimes an assistant is needed to prevent uncooperative animals from moving sideways.

Although the transportation of the equipment poses greater risks, the system typically provides significant comfort and working speed as the animals are not under pressure and are well controlled.
