How to use an eye muscle area analyzer to measure the size of bovine eye muscles

The eye muscle area measuring instrument is actually a B-ultrasound machine used in animals. Using the eye muscle area measuring instrument to detect eye muscles can reduce the stress response of cows, and no special treatment is required during operation, making it very convenient to use.

How to use an eye muscle area analyzer to measure the size of bovine eye muscles(图1)

Eye muscle area refers to the cross-sectional area of the eye muscle between the 12th and 13th thoracic ribs, which is significantly positively correlated with pre slaughter weight, net meat weight, slaughter rate, and net meat rate of cattle. Its estimated heritability is 0.6~0.7, so eye muscle area is commonly used to indicate the proportion and quality of muscle in the carcass. Eye muscle area is an important indicator for predicting carcass yield, which is almost equivalent to the estimation of meat to bone ratio. The technology of using an eye muscle area analyzer to detect eye muscle size can be quickly mastered by breeding personnel and breeding organizations, enabling genetic improvement of production animals. These detection data can be used to participate in breeding databases to generate offspring prediction differences.

Method for detecting bovine eye muscle area:

1. Move the cattle to a stable frame or fence and take proper measures to secure them.

2. Clean the hair on the testing area thoroughly, and if necessary, shave off the hair.

3. Inject coupling agent inside the backfat pad and bond the probe to the backfat pad.

4. Apply coupling agent on the side of the backfat pad in contact with the skin, and scan the cross-section closely between the 12th and 13th ribs to detect the lumbar muscle area. During the measurement process, it is necessary to apply even force and adjust parameters such as contrast and gain based on the image displayed on the eye muscle area analyzer to obtain the ideal image. Then, freeze and save the image.

5. Use the built-in measurement software of the eye muscle area analyzer to measure the size of the bovine eye muscle in real-time from the measured images.
