The ultrasound examination of donkey's backfat thickness is performed using a portable veterinary ultrasound machine with a multi frequency linear probe for real-time ultrasound scanning. Trim the hair before examination and apply coupling agent to improve image quality.

The detection of donkey backfat thickness can be evaluated from six measurement sites: the probe is placed perpendicular to the spine, at the level of the withered bones (7th and 8th thoracic vertebrae); Position 2 (S2), the probe is placed perpendicular to the spine and at the level of the 13th thoracic vertebra; Position 3 (S3), the probe is placed on the skull from the skull to the sacrum, parallel to the spine by 4 cm horizontally; Position 4 (S4), with the probe placed in front of the caudal head, at the level of the 1st to 4th coccyx vertebrae, parallel to the spine; Position 5 (S5), the probe is placed on the chest perpendicular to the 6th and 7th ribs, from the tail to the elbow; Position 6 (S6), the probe is placed on the chest perpendicular to the 12th and 13th ribs, between the midline of the back and abdomen. During ultrasound examination, the scanning sequence of all animals follows the same order from S1 to S6. Assuming that the variation error is small and all images are taken on the left side; For each site, at least one high-quality image has been recorded.

Understanding the potential changes in nutritional status and body energy reserves is crucial for the management of farm animals, as these can greatly impact their productivity, health, and reproduction. Physical condition monitoring is an important component of donkey herd management, aimed at continuously evaluating past milk production and energy intake. The use of animal B-ultrasound machine to detect the backfat thickness of donkeys is the main detection tool used in pastures.

Assessment of fat reserves in different body parts of pregnant and lactating female donkeys. The ultrasound detection of backfat measurement values is higher than the reported values of healthy donkeys, indicating different metabolic conditions of pregnant and lactating donkeys.
